The School of Life Sciences (SLS) at IUB held the prize-giving ceremony for the competition entitled “The Art of the Experiment” on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 in Lecture Gallery # 7002. The competition had taken place on November 14, 2018, and had been open to 3rd and 4th year students from the Biochemistry and Microbiology programs at SLS. Over 30 students among the School’s 200 students had participated in the event.
Professor Rita Yusuf, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, initiated the ceremony by elaborating on the school’s efforts over the last two years to increase the analytic capabilities of students by restructuring lectures, labs, workshops, and exams to focus more on problem-solving skills. Professor Yusuf and the Honorable Vice-Chancellor Professor Omar M. Rahman then handed out the certificates for participation along with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Prizes. The 1st Prize of Tk. 5,000 went to Ridwan Hossain, the 2nd Prize of Tk. 3,000 went to Maliha Tanjum Chowdhury and the 3rd Prize of Tk. 2,000 was split between Jabale Rahmat and Sigma Hussain.
For the next part of the ceremony, Mr. Ornob Alam, Lecturer at the School of Life Sciences, went through the problems and read out model excerpts from the students’ answers. The ceremony ended with the Vice-Chancellor’s closing remarks on the importance of building critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a world where knowledge is constantly being expanded and updated.
