Department of Physical Sciences organized study tour
On 21st November 2019, Department of Physical Sciences of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized its first ever Study Tour at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Savar. Atomic Energy Research Establishment, located in Savar, is the largest Government research station. AERE promotes peaceful uses of nuclear energy and does research in areas covering physical science, bioscience, engineering and nuclear medicine for human welfare and economic upliftment of the country. Fifteen students and six faculty members were shown a video presentation of the organization, its history, foundation, research, goals and other details. The students observed historical 4th Gen computer system and also the latest technology that is being used now for research and development of AERE. IUB students also visited the Centre for Research Reactor to observe the TRIGA Mark-II research reactor. The reactor is used in various fields of research and utilization such as, Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA), Neutron Radiography (NR), Neutron Scattering (NS), experimental reactor safety research, production of radioisotopes, training of manpower, education etc. It was an informative tour where students got to interact with some of the scientists working with the research reactor and also gained an experience of the variety in fields of study that are possible with AERE. In addition, interaction with the scientists also provided enriching knowledge about reactors and how experimental physics is applied in such a field.
