6th GOBESHONA Annual Conference concludes at IUB
The sixth annual ‘GOBESHONA’ conference on climate change ended on Friday, January 24, 2020. The International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) of IUB organized the four-day conference at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) campus in Bashundhara R/A, Dhaka.
This year the conference focused in taking ‘Research into Action’. Focused on bridging the gap on actors and researchers, through linking research with actors the conference was attended by around 800 national and international participants from various professional background. Around 70 international participants from USA, UK, India, Bhutan, Gambia, Sudan, Mozambique, Uganda, and Ethiopia attend the event. A total of 30 sessions was hosted by various national and international organization and academia over the course of four days.
Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director, ICCCAD at IUB inaugurated the conference on January 20, 2020 and welcomed the guests and gave an overview of GOBESHONA and its annual Conference. Ms. Farah Kabir, Country Director, ActionAid Bangladesh; Mr. Robert Chatterton Dickinson, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh and; Prof. Milan Pagon, Vice-Chancellor (Acting), IUB was present as Special Guests. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, who was the eighth Secretary General of the United Nations sent video message to this inaugural session of GOBESHONA that was displayed for the audience.
The second day of the conference had nine sessions in total, hosted by notable institutions such as IIED, Icddr,b, CIMMYT, Oxfam, BlueGold, and Friendship. The session hosted by Friendship titled “Mangrove Plantation: A Climate Action By Friendship In Southern Bangladesh” was joined by the Mrs. Habibun Nahar, MP, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The third day of the conference, dwelled on some powerful topics. The day had concluded by a prize-giving ceremony for the winners of the Best Paper Prize, a competition hosted by ICCCAD to encourage local researchers and a book launch of Climate Change Impacts on Gender Relations in Bangladesh by Sajal Roy.
Building up from the themes of the first three days of the conference, the fourth day focused on Science-Policy Dialogue. Mr. Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP was the Chief Guest of the closing ceremony. Mr. A Matin Chowdhury, Chairman, Board of Trustee, IUB; Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director, ICCCAD at IUB; Dr. Andrew Norton, Director, IIED; Sheela Patel, Chair of Slum Dwellers International (SDI); Prof. David Keith, Harvard University and; Mr. Phento Tshering, LDC Representation also spoke on the occasion.
