EEE Students Visit Kaptai Hydro-Power Station and Cox's Bazar Submarine Cable Landing Station
A group of 50 senior students from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) visited Kaptai Hydro-Power Station and Cox's Bazar Submarine Cable Landing Station during 3-6 June 2015 as a part of their field experience programme. IEEE IUB Student Branch arranged this industrial tour. In the 4-day industrial tour, students were accompanied by their Head of the Department Dr. Khosru M. Salim and four other faculty members - Dr. M. Abdur Razzak, Dr. Mustafa Habib Chowdhury, Ms. Saila Ishrat Annie and Ms. Shougat Nazbin Khan. On the 4th June 2015, students visited Kaptai Hydro-Power Station - the only Hydro-Electric Power Plant in Bangladesh. The students were briefed on the step-by-step generation process of electrical power from this plant by the factory engineers. During this tour the students visited the dam, spillway, power house, generation substation and the control room. On the 5th June 2015, students visited Cox's Bazar Submarine Cable Landing Station-the only fiber optic gateway in Bangladesh, which is connected to SEA-ME-WE-4. During the tour of this key point installation (KPI), students were briefed on the operation of this gateway using power point presentation by the station engineers. The tour also continued to control and switch room of this KPI. The question and answer session provided good insight into the operations of these important KPI. On the whole, the 4-day industrial tour was an excellent opportunity for the students of EEE & ETE majors to find practical applications of their classroom-based knowledge.
