The rising importance of the Bay of Bengal is closely linked to the rapid economic growth of its littoral nations and of the major powers involved in the Bay. The Bay of Bengal is becoming more and more strategically significant for many countries with ever-increasing energy demands, the Sea Lines of Communications (SLOC) and their protection are becoming a priority for the Asian countries.
Ambassador (Retd.) Tariq A. Karim, Senior Fellow, Bay of Bengal Institute Project, Office of the Vice Chancellor, IUB stated the above in a program held at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on February 26, 2020 in Bashundhara, Dhaka. School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences at IUB organized the event under the topic, ‘The Importance of the Bay of Bengal for Bangladesh and Bangladesh’s Role in it’. The Speech was followed by lively interactive session where the audience including IUB students inquired about various relevant issues.
Mr. Abul Hasan Chowdhury, Former State Minister for Foreign Affairs; Mr. Javed Hosein, Chairman, Finance Committee, IUB and Prof. Milan Pagon, Vice Chancellor (Acting) were also present on the occasion.
At the outset Prof. Imtiaz A Hussain, Dean (Acting), SLASS delivered the welcome speech. Deans, senior members of the faculty & administration and full house of students attended the program.
