Eid is nothing without everyone’s happiness. However, the current Covid-19 pandemic has snatched the élan of Eid which is visible on the faces of the poor people. Keeping that in mind, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) – DEA IUB arranged ‘Eid Gifts & Iftar Distribution-2021’. As per guidance of Mr. Ashraful Amin, Director, Council Affairs of IUB, Mr. Saiful Kabir, In-Charge of DoSA, and Ms. Fatema Tuz Zohora, Officer of DoSA directly took part in the events along with supervising the members throughout the distribution. They shared a significant number of food boxes and monthly grocery items to underprivileged people of Dhaka, Pabna, Khulna & Chittagong.
The whole event was divided into four segments covering different places. The activity had been started just before Ramadan and continued till Shab-e-Kadr.
The first event started with sole Eid gifts distribution by Ms. Maria Kibtia, Visual Secretary, DEA IUB Executive Board 2021-22. It was accomplished on the very first day of Ramadan so that people can have a financial easement during fasting throughout Ramadan and Eid as well. Due to strict lockdown, she only could manage to reach the slum dwellers and local helpless people of Baishteki, Mirpur 13, Dhaka. Collectively, 300 families had been provided every possible daily necessary commodity including Sari and Lungi. The freshly born NGO "Laugh & Love" which is a brainchild of Ms. Kibtia was a collaboration partner in this event.
Later on, with the collaboration of the Ashia Foundation, DEA IUB distributed daily grocery items to the underprivileged and helpless people of three different districts (Pabna, Khulna, and Chattogram) in the country. This event took place on May 9-10, 2021. The whole financing consisted of both the Ashia Foundation's fund as well as the donation collected from the members of DEA IUB. Aggregately, 4500 families have been reached who belong to the lower-income group. A grocery bag was assigned for each family containing daily necessary products. The items would support a four-member family to consume proper daily meals for about a month.
The third event took place on May 9, 2021 by distributing Eid food items to the underprivileged day laborers at Bashundhara R/A. The housemaids, rickshaw pullers, day laborers, masons, etc were mainly targeted who live hand to mouth but yet too shy to ask for help. In total, 120 people have been given gifts, which were designed to make their Eid day sweet in particular. For the most part, each bag consisted of Chinigura rice, soybean oil, powder milk, sugar, and vermicelli. The event was accomplished with the kind financial support of the employees of IUB along with the utmost effort of the DEA IUB members.
The entire program concluded with its fourth event which happened on May 11, 2021. With direct supervision and participation of Mr. Saiful Kabir, In-Charge, DoSA, and Ms. Fatema Tuz Zohora, Officer, DoSA, the members of the club shared 180 Iftar boxes among underprivileged people at Khilgaon area of Dhaka City.
The whole event was specially patronized by Mr. Tanweer Hasan, Ph.D, Vice-Chancellor, IUB who had been supportive and encouraging consistently.
