ICCCAD and IUB E-Lecture Series
A webinar was organised by the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Science and Management at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on June 20th, 2021. Danielle Falzon, a PhD Candidate in Sociology at Brown University, presented her talk on “Expertise and exclusivity: Who decides what to do about adaptation in Bangladesh?” The speaker discussed critical overarching issues regarding power embedded in different layers of adaptation decision making and also discussed the emergence and effects of adaptation as a business case in Bangladesh, focusing on organizations at the meso-level that influences the decision making landscape. The talk highlighted the fact that principles of locally-led adaptation will potentially contribute to the restructuring of local adaptation project planning and implementation.
The webinar is part of a series of lectures by renowned experts working in the field of climate change, climate policy, and sustainable development which aim to provide an opportunity to share knowledge and have discussions on important topics and issues relevant to climate change. The lectures are a regular feature of ICCCAD and further lectures are planned in the future.
Professor Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director of ICCCAD introduced the speaker and moderated the webinar. The lecture was followed with discussion by two designated discussants: Celine d’Cruz, Urban development practitioner and Visiting Researcher, ICCCAD and Mr. Istiakh Ahmed, Program Coordinator, Locally Led Adaptation & Resilience, ICCCAD. The session was attended by a large group of participants from academia, policy makers, and representatives from development actors.
