Green Planet Club organizes Intra-University Workshop in Sylhet

The Green Planet Club of IUB, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Science and Management, hosted their flagship event titled "Intra-University Workshop (IUW) 2022" from November 16-18, 2022. With the theme ‘Collaborative Governance for Biodiversity’, the two-day remote destination workshop was held at Friends in Village Development Bangladesh (FIVDB), Khadimnagar, Sylhet.

A group of 40 students from various clubs and departments of IUB participated in the workshop that aimed to provide an opportunity to learn directly from experts in the fields of biodiversity conservation and collaborative governance. Facilitators included Mr. Enam Ul Haque, Founder of Bangladesh Bird Club and Chairman of WildTeam; Mr. Ashiq Jahan Galib, Research Coordinator of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS); Mr. Abu Sayed Moniruzzaman Khan, Head of the Climate Change Programme, BRAC; and Mr. Tareq Mahmud Onu, Founding Member and Vice President of Bangladesh Bird Club. The programme was moderated by the executive team of the Green Planet Club.

The workshop consisted of four segments: interactive discussions, quiz, nature walk in Khadimnagar National Park, and a trip to the serene Shada Pathor in Bholaganj, Sylhet. The sessions touched topics such as managing biodiversity to cope up with climate change, marine biodiversity and governance, and bird conservation. Participants received insights into collaborative, inclusive and participatory approaches of biodiversity conservation leading to environmental sustainability.

In the first session, Brac's Mr. A S Moniruzzaman Khan shed light on the local nature-based adaptation activities in the climate vulnerable regions of Bangladesh. In the second session, titled “Marine Biodiversity Conservation'', WCS's Mr. Ashiq Jahan Galib talked about discovering and protecting ocean giants in the deep waters of Bangladesh using instruments such as GPS and VCF navigators. He also presented preserved skeletons of giant mammals such as stingray and shark.

The second day of the workshop started with a 'Nature Walk' in the Khadimnagar National Park. It was facilitated by Mr. Enam Ul Haque, who won the National Environment Award in 2021, and Mr. Tareq Mahmud Onu. The walk was followed by a short discussion on the Birds of Khandimnagar National Park and a short quiz. The winners of the quiz were presented with with books written by Mr. Enam and Mr. Onu. The final session, "Traveling for Birds,” was conducted by Mr. Tareq Onu, renowned traveler, mountaineer, nature explorer and writer. In his session, he mainly showcased pictures of birds from his adventures. In the certificate-giving and closing session, the faculty coordinator of the Green Planet Club, Mr. Ekhtekharul Islam, delivered a vote of thanks.
