EEE Students Visit 170 MW Power Plant in Sylhet
A group of 45 students from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) visited Energyprima Ltd., a 50MW Rental Power Plant and Power Substation at Kumargaon, Sylhet during 19-21 February 2016 as a part of their field experience programme. IEEE IUB Student Branch arranged this industrial tour. In the 3-day industrial tour, students were accompanied by the Head of the EEE Department, Dr. M. Abdur Razzak and three other faculty members - Dr. Mustafa Habib Chowdhury, Branch Counselor of IEEE IUB Student Branch, Ms. Saila Ishrat Annie, Ms. Tahsin Ferdous Ara Nayna, and Office Manager of the EEE Department, Ms. Waseka Wahid. During the visit of the power plant, students were briefed on the step-by-step generation process of electrical power from this plant by Engr. Nizam Uddin Ahmed, General Manager (Operation) of Energyprima Ltd. and his team of engineers. During this tour, the students visited the control room, engine room, gas turbines, power organizers, and the temperature management room. Afterwards, the students visited to the nearby grid substation house accompanied by Engr. Nizam Uddin himself. During this tour to the substation, students were briefed on power transmission from the grid substation, load management, and power monitoring system. Students were also visited two separate power plants run by gas turbine: one is 20MW and the other one is 150MW. Students were also visited the transmission control room, load management and monitoring room, and distribution switch terminals. The question and answer session provided good insight into these important operations, protocols and machines. On the whole, the 3-day industrial tour was an excellent opportunity for the students of EEE & ETE majors to learn about the practical applications of their classroom-based knowledge.
