Grand reception for IUB Team on winning Mars Rover Challenge 2017 (with video)
To celebrate the outstanding achievement of IUB Team Attendant in the world’s largest Mars Rover Challenge 2017, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized a grand reception on July 17, 2017 at IUB auditorium in Bashundhara, Dhaka. Mr. Zunaid Ahmed Palak, MP, honorable State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) of the People's Republic of Bangladesh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
University Rover Challenge is an international robotics competition for university students featured an elite field of teams vying to build the world’s best student-designed Mars rover. The University Rover Challenge (URC) is the world's premier robotics competition held annually in the desert of southern Utah in the United States. URC challenges student teams to design and build the next generation of Mars rovers that will one day work alongside astronauts exploring the Red Planet.
At the outset, the Rover of IUB who won the contest welcomed Mr. Zunaid Ahmed Palak, MP, honorable State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with a bouquet. In his speech, Mr. Palak said that IUB is an ideal institution and requested the university to be the knowledge partner of ICT ministry. He also assured that in future, the government will support IUB in order to secure global position. He also assured that a research laboratory will be set up at IUB so all researchers can carry forward their researches to make a digital Bangladesh as early as possible.
Congratulating the Team, Mr. Rashed Chowdhury, Chairman, Board of Trustees, IUB, mentioned, this inspiration will encourage our youth and we want our students to have more international exposures.
Prof. M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor of IUB, said, I am really proud for being a part of this university. He urged all concerned to do more researches for meeting future challenges.
Dr. Md. Ashraful Amin, Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IUB and Adviser of `Team Attendant’ presented a visual presentation of the competition and shared experiences of participating in the world’s largest Mars Rover Challenge.
Among others, Mr. Towhid Samad, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Chittagong Independent University and Mrs. Luna Shamsuddoha, honorable Trustee of IUB also spoke on the occasion. Prof. Shahriar Khan, Dean, School of Engineering and Computer Sciences, IUB gave vote of thanks.
Later the guests handed over certificates and crests to all eleven participants of the competition.
A record 82 teams from 13 countries took part in URC 2017. Following a rigorous two-stage down-select process, 36 teams were invited to the field competition at MDRS. Subsequently, the team of the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), "Team Attendant" secured the first position among all Bangladeshi participating universities and became second in whole Asia and tenth globally.
