IUB honours Prof. B K Jahangir

 

A reception ceremony was organized by the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS) of IUB to honor one of the leading social scientists of the country Prof. Burhanuddin Khan Jahangir on the evening of 10th of February at the University’s Bashundhara campus.

There were welcoming speeches by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. M Omar Rahman, and Prof. Nazrul Islam, director of SLASS on the occasion. The VC honored Prof. Jahangir with a sash.

In his speech Prof. Jahangir offered his view of the society and touched some important current issues. He put emphasis on the study of history besides other subjects of social sciences. ‘History is what pulls people to their origins, it is highly important to include history in the interdisciplinary study system of any university and the next generation will be thankful to you later in their lives’, Prof. B. K. Jahangir observed.

After prof. Jahangir’s speech Prof. Nazrul Islam thanked him again and said ‘for many of us he has been our teacher and our mentor. We owe him a tremendous amount of debt for guiding us in many ways in our career’. The Vice Chancellor in his concluding speech expressed how nostalgic he was by professor’s presence.

Prof. Burhanuddin Khan Jahangir, is one of the very first anthropologists in Bangladesh who established the anthropology department at Jahangir Nagar University and later on at the University of Dhaka. He is also a prominent poet and art critique.
