| Professor Jane Menken, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Director, Institute of Behavioral Science, University of Colorado at Boulder was the featured speaker at a seminar entitled “Long-term Effects of Health and Development Interventions in Rural Bangladesh” organized by The Centre for Health, Population and Development (CHPD) at Independent University, Bangladesh on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 at the University's Baridhara campus. Professor Omar Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor, IUB and Executive Director of CHPD moderated the seminar and Dr. Rita Yusuf, Assistant Professor, School of Environmental Science and Management, IUB delivered the Formal Vote of Thanks. Professor Menken presented data and study designs which led to her current project in Bangladesh, a 15 year follow-up on the initial Matlab Health and Socioeconomic Survey designed and implemented by Professor Omar Rahman. Professor Rahman will be intrinsically involved with the current follow-up study as well. An accomplished scientist – mathematician, demographer, and sociologist, Professor Jane Menken has used the empirical dimensions of mathematics to help better understand individuals and communities, and the dynamics therein which impact decision-making and vice versa, her skills as a social scientist to tease out mathematical models of health, fertility and behavior based on socio-cultural contexts and constraints. The presentation was followed by a lively and inspiring discussion session. The seminar was attended by members of the senior management including the registrar, directors of the schools, faculty members, and students. |
