IUB celebrates Tennessee Williams’s centennial
 
To celebrate the centennial of famous American writer Tennessee Williams, the Department of English of IUB organized a day-long programme entitled Page to Stage at its permanent campus at Bashundhara, Dhaka on Thursday, 17 November 2011. Among others, the Director of the American Center, Dhaka, Ms Lauren Lovelace was present on the occasion.
Dr Niaz Zaman, Professor, University of Dhaka presented the key-note paper titled: `Dramatizing the self: the Art of Tennessee Williams’. Professor M Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor (In-Charge), IUB also spoke on the occasion. Prof Omar Rahman noted that Tennessee Williams wrote about the conflict between fantasy and reality. Furthermore he remains as relevant today as in the past.
After the inaugural session there were three academic and a reading sessions participated by academics from IUB, NSU and Jahangirnagar University. At the academic sessions a total of 8 papers were presented. A scene from one of the major plays of Williams, the glass menagerie, translated into Bangla by Dr Akimun Rahman, Associate Professor, IUB and coordinator Bangla Club, staged by the members of the club which was directed by Asif Kamal.
