In continuation of the ‘Youth and Environment’ outreach program, School of Environmental Science and Management (SESM) visited DPS STS School on November 15, 2018 to conduct a workshop for A-level students. ‘Youth and Environment’ is an outreach initiative of SESM in collaboration with the Outreach, Extension and Continuing Education (OECE), Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor. Our faculty members conduct workshops to create and raise awareness among the youths about issues and problems threatening our environment and how to solve them. There is a significant gap between an increasing demand for proper knowledge of environmental issues and the number of people who are aware of this demand and can execute these knowledge and skills. It is the high time to prepare our young generation as the future leaders who should gradually take the lead in addressing and minimizing the mentioned problems.
A team of four members from IUB – Ms. Lima Choudhury, Deputy Director, Admissions and Financial Aid Office, Mr. Tanvir Ahmed Haroon, Lecturer, Department of Environmental Management, SESM, Mr. Saquib Ahmad Khan, Lecturer, Department of Environmental Science, SESM and Ms. Roti Chakraborty, Senior Officer, OECE visited the school. Mr. Tanvir Ahmed Haroon and Mr. Saquib Ahmad Khan conducted the workshop. They started with describing the current situation of environment and its pollution worldwide and in Bangladesh, especially focused on the pollution and problems caused by plastic materials. Then they described how we can contribute in our daily lives to minimize this pollution. They also gave an idea about SESM’s various activities, researches and programs for minimizing the causes and effects of pollution in Bangladesh. Ms. Lima Choudhury emphasized IUB’s role in addressing these issues.
The workshop was followed by an interactive question-answer session where alongside issues of environmental pollution, participants also had queries regarding IUB, SESM, its departments and student-centered activities. All the participants were impressed by SESM’s concern for environmental pollution, IUB as an institution and its contribution to motivate the students to think, discuss the solutions and raise environmental awareness. The students and the authority have shown interest to visit IUB and join various events focusing on environmental issues in future.
